Seven leading Ethiopian Social Entrepreneurs announced today the official formation of the Association of Social Enterprise Ethiopia: aiming to support the growing social enterprise ecosystem that strengthen Ethiopia’s positive socio-economic progress.
Recent research conducted by the British Council shows there are approximately 50,000 functioning social enterprises in Ethiopia. Bruktawit Tigabu, Board Chair and winner of the 2018 Outstanding Social Entrepreneur of the Year, by Schwab Foundation says: “Social Enterprise is crucial for any country committed to creating sustainable growth. Social Enterprise addresses the biggest societal problems while offering market-based solutions. We social entrepreneurs are charged with the responsibility of building awareness of this business model.”
Social Enterprise Ethiopia is the national body for organizations dedicated to social purpose driven businesses in Ethiopia. Social Enterprise Ethiopia was licensed by FDRE Ministry of Trade on October 03, 2018 to officially serve the social enterprise community directed at sustainable impact. It was founded to foster a culture of social enterprise in Ethiopia, by ensuring information and advice is made available to those running social enterprises. Social Enterprise Ethiopia advocates for social enterprise policy and legal support structure in Ethiopia and works to create a conducive environment in which social enterprises work and thrive with government and other stakeholders. The president of Social Enterprise Ethiopia, Kibret Abebe, said, “We have big ambitions for Social Enterprise Ethiopia. Ethiopia will host the upcoming Social Enterprise World Forum and Social Enterprise Ethiopia will play a key role in this event a success. We are grateful for enabling partners like the Ethiopian Government, British Council and Reach for Change, all leaders that foster social enterprises in Ethiopia.”
Today, the founders of Social Enterprise Ethiopia are delighted to officially launch the formation of the Association of Social Enterprise Ethiopia at Capital Hotel, Addis Ababa with fellow members of the association, government representatives, strategic partners, media and supporters of social enterprises in Ethiopia.
Social Enterprise Ethiopia is a registered association under the FDRE Ministry of Trade – Chamber of Commerce and sectorial association certification proclamation No 341/2000 as a non-profit trade association to serve as the national body of the social enterprise community in Ethiopia.
