Human Rights Watch said this evening that the Ethiopian government should allow an independent investigation to examine what happened on Sunday in Bishoftu, when at least 50 people – likely many more – died during a cultural event.

“Blaming the deaths on ‘anti-peace elements’ without an investigation disregards possibly unlawful government crowd control measures and heightens tensions in Oromia,” HRW said in a statement. “The government should address the legitimate grievances of the protesters across Ethiopia and end the use of deadly force to quell largely peaceful protests that began nearly a year ago.”
